The decision to plead guilty to a crime is a critical one that can have lasting impact on a person’s life. But in Northampton County, defendants are encouraged to do so at arraignment. “Efficiency can’t come at the stake of constitutional rights. Even if a case is just a misdemeanor, there are many collateral consequences,” said Sara Jacobson, an associate professor at Temple’s Beasley School of Law.
