With the help of faculty members in Temple's Criminal Justice Department, Philadelphia Police Department officers are targeting locations all across the city as part of a new Federal pilot program called Smart Policing. The goal is to help police do a better job of cracking down on crime and to encourage better relationships with the communities they patrol. The project will target so-called "problem-solving" areas and repeat offender areas where police focus on locking up known criminals tied to shootings and violence. After Smart Policing runs for a few more months, Temple's Jerry Ratcliffe and others will study the results and turn them over to the department.
