Huffington Post features study of teen behavior
Teenage risk taking often takes place when a teenager is accompanied by a friend. A new study by Temple researchers Jason Chein and Laurence Steinberg shows why. The findings demonstrate that when teens are with friends they are more susceptible to the potential rewards of a risk than they are when they are alone. "We know that in the real world, teenagers take more risks when with their friends. This is the first study to identify the underlying process," said Steinberg, a developmental psychologist. Chein, a cognitive neuroscientist and the lead author of the study, noted, "Our findings may be helpful in developing ways to intervene and reduce adolescent risk taking."

Sport marketing professor Joe Mahan on entertainment at NBA games
One-third of NBA teams use DJs to hype the crowd, and the Phoenix Suns are the latest to join the trend. Because basketball crowds skew young, the NBA has a hip image almost requiring non-stop entertainment. "The marketing and promotions departments try to fill as much dead space as possible," said Joe Mahan, assistant professor of sport marketing at Temple. "The addition of DJs and newer trends are representative of trying to bring in something that your competition might not have."
