January homicide rate challenging

As of Tuesday, the city of Philadelphia had tallied 34 homicides in 2012. That's one more than last year's January count and more than January 2007, when the city finished the year with 391, a five-year high. City officials and analysts warn that it's too early to assess an entire year based on one month's worth of data. "The crime rate always fluctuates. It's very difficult to predict from one month to another," said Jerry Ratcliffe, a Temple professor of criminal justice.
