The building from which Temple University gets its name has re-opened, after sitting empty for 30 years. The Baptist Temple was built in 1891, home for the Grace Baptist Congregation led by Russell Conwell, who also offered night classes—the seeds of today's University. It's one of the few remaining examples of nineteenth century architecture along North Broad Street. Temple President Ann Weaver Hart says the building almost didn't survive the ravages of time: "In the mid-80's there was a plan to just tear the building down and just build something else here. But instead we mothballed it until we were able to put together the money to do this.  And, we think it was a real success." Hart hopes the building will become a major venue for concerts and other events.
