Temple University and the Philadelphia police department have collaborated on a project that could result in more police foot patrols in some of the city's most violent neighborhoods. Last summer, over 250 Philadelphia police officers were involved in foot patrols in 60 violent crime locations throughout the city as part of the Philadelphia Foot Patrol Experiment. "We found a very positive 22 percent reduction of violent crime in the foot patrol areas they worked in,” said Jerry Ratcliffe, professor of criminal justice at Temple and the lead researcher on the project. “Now we're in the process of trying to understand how that took place, what was the right set of ingredients to make that recipe work."
