Long-forgotten African-American cemeteries tell stories of honor, courage
A dedicated group of citizens is working to document and preserve historic African-American cemeteries in New Jersey. Many gravestones are marked with little more than the name of the deceased, especially those of African-American men who served in the U.S. Colored Troops during the Civil War. Thirteen such graves were discovered by a team of students from Temple's Archaeology Department last summer during excavations of Timbuctoo, a village nestled under a grassy hill in that former Burlington County settlement.
