Starbucks has corned the coffee market, but some contend they really have actually transcended culture. As people sip their Starbucks, they display to the world their station in life as if to say, yes, I have arrived. Bryant Simon, professor of history at Temple University, is the author of Everything But Coffee, Learning About America from Starbucks. "The joke has been, why were we willing to overpay for coffee? But it was actually a bargain. For $4, someone could see you as discerning and sophisticated, who cared about community and the environment," said Simon.
