Eastern State Penitentiary is celebrating the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. with a program that includes dramatic readings of King’s famous letter from Birmingham Jail. “It’s easy to forget that the civil rights movement in the 50s and 60s was a radical movement,” says David Farber, a professor at Temple. He is serving as the historian for the program. “It was a letter trying to explain the civil rights movement to so many whites who only vaguely sympathized with the civil rights movement,” says Farber.
