The educational achievement of black boys and young black men continues to lag behind their white peers, nationwide. James Earl Davis, interim dean of Temple's College of Education, says that a tension exists between individual concerns and institutional responsibility: "I find that the way to alleviate the problem is probably at the intersection of both ... where we hold black boys and young men accountable for their actions in schools, but we're also sensitive to issues of respect and respectability, and we recognize the assets and strengths that they bring to school."
