NPR's "All Things Considered"

For decades, it was rumored that a 5-acre clearing in New Jersey had been a stop on the Underground Railroad. Now, Temple archaeologists are completing a thorough excavation of the area known as Timbuctoo. They're finding that the freed and escaped slaves who made it there didn't just pass through — they stayed. Chris Barton, the Temple archaeologist leading the dig, says that every artifact recovered shows the tenacity of Timbuctoo residents. "These people had to deal with Jim Crow, they had to deal with slavery, they had to deal with economic oppression, racism," he said. "That's what we're really trying to find."
