In an opinion piece, Renee Hobbs, a professor of mass media and communication at Temple and founder of Temple's Mass Media Education Lab, responded to a recent study of students in grades five through eight that showed that those from disadvantaged families got lower scores once the Internet arrived at home. "This research seals the deal on something I've suspected for years: Simply owning a computer doesn't make you smart," wrote Hobbs. "So let's not confuse just owning technology with having the knowledge, skills and competencies needed to be successful in the 21st century."
