In "Memoirs of an Obese Physician" written for the Annals of Internal Medicine, cardiologist Joseph Majdan recounts a series of insensitive comments from colleagues who showed little understanding of obesity. In 2003, Gary Foster, now director of Temple's Center for Obesity Research and Education, conducted a survey of primary-care doctors' views on obesity. According to Foster, more than half saw obese patients as ugly and noncompliant; a third saw them as weak-willed and lazy.
