In Pennsylvania, the teen pregnancy rate is nearly four times higher for Latinos than it is for whites. Growing up in Reading, Temple student Kelly Lopez, a public health major, saw how friends and family members were affected by teen pregnancy. So she decided to do something to educate young women on ways to prevent pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases. She worked with a clinic in her hometown to start Chicas in Charge, a program for Latinas ages 14 through 17 focused on treating and preventing sexually transmitted diseases in Berks and Schuylkill counties. "There's a culture in the high schools that says that teen pregnancy is OK, and it's not," Lopez said. "I saw [teen girls'] struggles."
