Marla Wolfson, a professor of physiology, pediatrics and medicine at Temple University School of Medicine, was awarded a pair of grants, totaling $4.4 million, from the Office of Naval Research. One is to study a group of chemicals' ability to protect lungs in high altitudes and the other is to look at whether the same chemicals can lessen the impact of traumatic brain injuries. "There's a great need for a common technology to address injuries suffered by military personnel in environmentally stressful locations, such as high altitude, where there can be a lack of oxygen," said Wolfson.
