The Death of Artemio Cruz remains the best-known work of Carlos Fuentes, the celebrated Mexican writer who died Tuesday in Mexico City at 83. Luis Gonzáles del Valle, chair of the Department of Spanish and Portuguese at Temple, calls it "a novel about the impact of the revolution on the people and mind-set of Mexico." It stands as a lament on the tragic failure of democracy to fulfill its own promise.
