Starting this fall, the use of robotics will allow doctors at Temple University Hospital to perform intricate heart surgeries without having to open a patient's chest. Four small incisions are made in the chest where the probes to the robot are placed, and they can be used for a number of procedures including valve repair and replacement, tumor removal and bypass surgery. Sloane Guy, chief of cardiothoracic surgery at Temple's School of Medicine, says that the robotic arms are easily controlled via a console: "I have absolute control over those arms. Everything I do at the console will happen inside the patient."
