Temple tackles childhood obesity with $3.7 million grant from USDA
Temple's Center for Obesity Research and Education (CORE) has been awarded a five-year $3.7 million grant to study the link between parenting strategies and childhood obesity. Considered the first of its kind, the study is a translational research project that provides basic behavioral science on children's portion sizes to create a community-level nutrition program. "For the past 10 years my research laboratory has been doing studies on how children develop eating behavior and regulate appetite," said lead researcher Jennifer Orlet Fisher. "This project is taking what we've learned over the past decade and trying to incorporate it into a nutrition education program that really emphasizes behavioral strategies that really help parents promote healthy portion sizes in their pre-school age kids."
