Treating gunshot wounds can be delicate for some men

While most gunshot wounds are to the head or chest, a smaller number of men suffer wounds to a much more sensitive area — the scrotum. Jack Mydlo, chair of the Department of Urology at Temple's School of Medicine, recently searched 20 years of hospital records for cases where they'd treated these types of injuries. Although only 97 patients were seen, in about half the cases, doctors were able to salvage the area. Mydlo said that in these types of cases, the motive for shooting is usually revenge for some perceived romantic slight. "In a drug deal, they go for the head or the heart," he said. "If it's romantic involvement, they go for the genitalia."
