TU Harrisburg play therapy expert on helping kids cope with illness
Many children's hospitals and clinics are using a type of play therapy called medical play to help their patients understand and cope with their illnesses. Often, children facing chronic illness and hospitalization fear a lack of control over what's happening, said Jean Camberg, an instructor of social work and play therapy at Temple University Harrisburg. "Since children have no control over medical procedures, play therapy helps them develop an inner sense of control of their own responses to a situation. This response is critical to coping and recovery."
