Michelle Obama appeared today at a supermarket adjacent to Temple's Main Campus to speak out against childhood obesity. Her campaign is serving as a bridge from the White House to black America, observers say. "It's a nuanced conversation about race and place and economic inequality," says Melissa Gilbert of Temple's Department of Geography and Urban Studies. "It's a very smart approach because she is bringing up issues that people haven't thought about in the popular mainstream society." Obama also visited a Philadelphia elementary school where a program run by Temple's Center for Obesity Research and Education is making a difference.
