Traffic congestion is increasing around the world, and so is the number of researchers who are trying to understand the science of traffic jams. In the future, intelligent driving systems — cameras and computers that read and react to surrounding cars — could lessen jams if they were adopted widely enough, but not eliminate them entirely. Until then, researchers need to study driver behavior more closely, perhaps with in-car sensors and cameras, to improve their models. "How do we actually drive?" asked Benjamin Seibold, a Temple mathematician, in WSJ's "The Numbers Guy" blog. "What do we incorporate into our decision to accelerate or decelerate? This is not really known."
