In the African-American community, the instance of hypertension is particularly high. But a new study found that African Americans who saw video of other African Americans talking about their hypertension were able to better control their own blood pressure levels. This type of communication, called peer-to-peer education, can be useful, but is often underutilized among groups who have less obvious disorders or illnesses, such as high cholesterol or blood pressure, says Alfred Bove of Temple's School of Medicine. He says it's more commonly used in weight-loss programs or for more overt disorders such as heart disease.
