The case of Jared Loughner has raised questions about mental health care in America. Why do some people get treatment for mental illness while others don't? Are there holes in the system? Although it's impossible for anyone to diagnose Loughner from a distance, he clearly is "a troubled young man," said Mark Salzer, chair of Temple's Department of Rehabilitation Sciences. "He demonstrated those troubles in a number of different settings over a long period of time," Salzer said. "I think most mental health professionals would agree that someone reaching out for help for this young man — be it parents, friends, the school system, the community college he was part of — would have been a good thing."
