The out-of-control BP oil spill is spewing up to 25,000 to 30,000 barrels of oil a day into the ravaged Gulf of Mexico. Host Marty Moss-Coane talked with Michel Boufadel, chair of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Temple, to understand the future implications of this disaster. "In terms of impact, I believe — until now — the Exxon Valdez's impact was more acute, covering 50 miles of shoreline in the Prince William Sound. I'm hoping we don't reach that level in the Gulf. The beach in Alaska is more porous, so the oil percolates deeper in the gravel beaches and gets entrapped. In the Gulf, the sand is finer, so the oil does not penetrate as deeply — of course, the sensitive areas in the Gulf are the wetlands," said Boufadel.
