Inclement Weather and Unscheduled Closings

As you know Temple University has experienced four inclement weather disruptions within the last three weeks and we have plenty of winter season still ahead.  We are keenly aware of how challenging the conditions have been for our employees and appreciate the extraordinary effort that you have made to get to work so that the university’s operations are uninterrupted.

Many students and employees have inquired about how class cancellation and campus closure decisions are made.  The Inclement Weather and Unscheduled Campus Closings policy (04.31.12) is available online at http://policies.temple.edu.  I have highlighted some information from the policy below.

  1. Temple University’s calendar is constructed with the expectation that instructional and business operations will be carried out as scheduled. To the degree that the weather or emergency indicates, closings may occur at various levels:

    • Campus Closed - Only employees designated as essential by their supervisors should report to work on campus. Campuses included in the scope of this policy are Main, Ambler, Center City, Podiatry, Health Sciences, Fort Washington, Harrisburg and TASB.

    • Classes Cancelled - No classes will be held, but all employees must report to work as usual.

    • Delay of Class Start - The start of classes will be delayed until an announced time. The day's regular schedule will be followed once classes start. All employees must report to work as usual.
  1. Essential employees are required to report for duty and to perform their duties despite the notification of a weather-related emergency. Employees are advised to consult with their supervisors to determine whether they are essential or non-essential employees, and to obtain specific information about the proper reporting procedures.

  2. Temple University Health System employees are not subject to this policy, but are subject to that of the Health System.

  3. When a decision is made to close a campus, cancel classes, or delay an opening, all registered students and employees can expect to receive an emergency notification via the TU Alert system.  Please visit www.temple.edu/tuready to register.  The Temple University homepage (www.temple.edu) will be updated immediately following a decision to close, cancel or delay opening. Please check the website for the latest information.

While our hope is that milder weather is on the way, we appreciate your work and continued support.
