John Helferty, associate professor of electrical & computer engineering, prepares for the launch with COE alumni Matthew Walters, ENG ’15, and Atiyyah Z Muhammad, ENG ’15.

The College of Engineering has teamed up with NASA to collect biological samples of both the upper atmosphere and near outer space. It’s part of the RockSat–C program. John Helferty, associate professor of electrical & computer engineering, along with several recent engineering alumni designed the experiment to collect the atmospheric samples, which will be gathered in cylinders and loaded onto a sounding rocket.

Launch is scheduled for June 25-26 at NASA’s Flight Facility on Wallops Island, Virginia.
