Incoming student receives Temple’s first Katz Scholarship
Growing up in Camden, New Jersey, Indonesia Young desired to go to college and rise above her impoverished background.
Not only is Young a member of Temple’s incoming freshman class but she also is the first student to receive the Katz Scholarship, named for the late Lewis Katz, a Camden native and former university trustee and philanthropist who was killed in a 2014 plane crash.
"We wanted to as closely as possible emulate Lewis Katz, so one of the huge criteria was somebody from the Camden area," said James Dicker, vice president of institutional advancement at Temple. "We were looking for people who come from a similar background and embody his ideals in terms of community service, being active outside of just what's going on in school."
With the scholarship’s assistance, Young—who has worked since age 14—will not have to worry about the costs of tuition, room and board, and books. They will be fully covered for four years.
