As a member of the provost’s senior staff, the senior vice provost (SVP) is appointed by and reports to the provost. The SVP will be a leader in faculty development and committed to enriching the faculty experience and enabling them to achieve their academic and professional goals. The SVP will provide support services for Temple University’s teaching, research and clinical faculty, deans and the university’s senior officers with respect to facilitating, monitoring, reviewing, strengthening and recognizing faculty excellence. The SVP will also create and encourage opportunities for the collaboration of faculty across disciplines. The SVP will be a key communication resource for faculty in response to programs, issues and/or questions; and provide support services for the university’s teaching, research and clinical faculty, deans and the university’s senior officers. The SVP provides leadership in facilitating the appointment, reappointment, review and recognition of full-time and part-time faculty; organizes and manages numerous annual personnel processes and procedures including but not limited to: initial appointment; reappointment; tenure and promotion; the awarding of research and study leaves, summer research awards; and various types of recognition of teaching and research excellence. The SVP will oversee the Teaching and Learning Center and a wide range of professional development activities and services for faculty and department chairs.
The SVP works with the provost, the deans, the vice president for Human Resources and the university’s Office of Multi-Cultural Affairs to review and monitor the university’s annual faculty hiring plans with respect to relevant Affirmative Action goals and diversity recruiting objectives and to ensure conformance and integration of the plans with major goals and programs of the university and the schools and colleges. The incumbent works closely with OMCA’s Office of Affirmative Action and assists in direct coordination with active search committees to ensure thorough and appropriate searches. The SVP serves as principal liaison with the President's Office, deans and other senior administrators on issues associated with faculty affairs and standards; represents the provost and/or serves as staff to ad hoc and standing university committees. Perform other duties as assigned.
Terminal degree and academic credentials sufficient for successful consideration for “tenure” and the rank of full professor at Temple, and significant senior-level administrative experience in a higher education environment including extensive involvement in faculty relations. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
Demonstrated excellent management, oral and written communication and organizational leadership skills. Strong interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to interface at all organization levels and effectively communicate utilizing a variety of available techniques (verbal, written, electronic, etc.). Must demonstrate the ability to take appropriate independent action based on a coordinated and effective utilization of professional judgment, decision-making, and interpretive and organizational skills.
