Temple's School of Medicine launched a new elective this spring which focuses on the sexual health of the LGBT community. School of Medicine faculty members Robert Bettiker, Heather Clauss, Rafik Samuel and Eric Schaff delivered lectures and developed the curriculum for the seven two-hour sessions, which included clinical activities and mock patient interviews. The initiative, led by students Jason Duran and Betty Chernak, grew out of the pair's observation that education on the LGBT community is lacking in many medical schools. "What we wanted to do was start this training program so that when we're physicians, we're better able to deal with all types of patients," said Duran. "We don't want physicians to walk into a room and be completely surprised by what a patient has to tell you and not know how to answer their questions."
