To fight body image issues, spend more time with kids
A recent poll shows that 95 percent of girls between the ages of 16 and 21 want to change their bodies in some way. And in another recent study, researchers found that TV programs focused on appearance are swaying the self-esteem of girls as young as five. But experts say there are ways to boost a child's self-esteem, such as parents spending more time with their children. The average teen girl gets about 180 minutes of media exposure daily and only about 10 minutes of parental interaction a day, according to Renee Hobbs, professor of mass media and communication at Temple.
