Are overeaters really addicts?

(There is no link to this story)

New research from Yale demonstrates that food addictions can be as powerful as being hooked on alcohol or drugs for some. A small group of pathological eaters were shown pictures of milk shakes during brain scans and their brain reward centers were activated in the same way that an alcoholic responds to a picture of a drink. Frank Farley, a psychologist at Temple, says the new addiction study needs more research and that there are a lot of reasons why people overeat. "Eating behavior can be attributable to many things and not just, you know, certain brain processes. There can be all sorts of social factors, environmental factors, family factors, genetic factors."
