With the Temple football team preparing for a game at Penn State, a major feature story in the Times lauded the program's "remarkable turnaround" under Coach Al Golden. "Temple’s football revival has coincided with an ambitious plan to transform Philadelphia's major public university and to revitalize the surrounding neighborhood," wrote Jeré Longman. "Once primarily a commuter school, Temple now has 11,000 of its 37,000 students living on or near campus….A $1.2 billion construction and renovation program [is] planned over the next decade. A sense of community finally exists on campus....The as-yet-unanswered question is, exactly what sort of football program is it possible and reasonable to build and sustain? 'We can be as good as we want to be,' said Bill Bradshaw, Temple's athletic director."
