There may be a black president in the White House, but America still isn't the postracial society that it could and should be. There's still a tendency to want to place each other into neat, little racial categories, even though Americans who identify as mixed race are one of the fastest-growing demographic groups in the country. "People don't know how to begin the conversation about race and identity," said Lori Tharps, assistant professor of journalism at Temple. "We still can't get a handle on a conversation about race without getting nervous or uncomfortable or hostile."
