Optician services under Temple vision coverage

A major change has been made to Temple University’s Vision coverage. Effective June 2007, the university terminated its service agreement with Tus Ojos, the optician located on the sixth floor of the Parkinson Pavilion at Temple University Hospital. Therefore, Tus Ojos is no longer an approved Temple University vendor.

Employees wishing to use the university’s vision benefits (as detailed below) must seek treatment through the Temple University Department of Ophthalmology, which has locations at the Health Sciences Center and on the Main Campus. Treatment costs incurred through any other provider (including Tus Ojos) will not be covered under the university’s vision plan.

Vision coverage details

Full-time Temple University employees and their eligible dependents are eligible to receive an eye exam and a pair of eyeglasses once every two years. Eligible dependents include an employee’s spouse and unmarried, legally dependent biological, adopted and step children to age 19; to age 23 if a full-time student. Full-time-student verification is required for dependent children over the age of 19. Coverage for an employee’s domestic partner is available for employees who have provided certification to the Benefits Department that he or she is a member of a domestic partnership in accordance with Temple University’s Domestic Partner Policy.

Employees and their eligible dependents must have their eye exams performed by the Temple University Department of Ophthalmology. Employees then have the option to choose a standard pair of frames and lenses for free, or different frames and specialty lenses for an additional cost. In lieu of eyeglasses, some employees may elect to receive a $25 allowance for the purchase of contact lenses.
