Temple Contemporary September event lineup

Our mission is to creatively reimagine the social function of art.

Tuesday, Sept. 1

Trenton Doyle Hancock will be working with us and his collection of more than 1,000 toys to make his first very own people-powered rideable artwork. Find out more from him in person at 6 p.m. tonight.

Wednesday, Sept. 2

Polished hardwood floors are great for our gallery, but even better for our fourth-annual Office Chair Relay Race from 1 to 3 p.m.

Friday, Sept. 4

Curating is caring. Every Wednesday and Friday, we’re delicately restoring a historic Philadelphia organ whose tune hasn’t been heard in more than 100 years.

Saturday, Sept. 5

No more bland metal folding chairs. Find your place to sit at any of our events by picking out a chair lent to us by more than 75 local cultural organizations. Visit our website for a complete list of our creative partners.

Tuesday, Sept. 8

Get blissfully bored at artist James Turrell’s Chestnut Hill Skyspace. The bus leaves at 5:30 p.m.

Wednesday, Sept. 9

We can’t stop staring at artist Tom Friedman’s 1,000 Hours of Staring, on view through October.

Thursday, Sept. 10

Artist Isaac Lin turns doodling into an art form from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Friday, Sept. 11

The bees are back! Watch as their combing “mends” Aganetha Dyck’s broken porcelain figures inside our observation hive.

Saturday, Sept. 12

The Building Heroes of Philly’s Department of Making and Doing are going to heroically design and build our front desk from scratch today.

Monday, Sept. 14

Every Monday now through December, grab a free cup of award-winning Elixir coffee with us from 7:45 to 9:45 a.m., and find out what’s coming up next.

Tuesday, Sept. 15

Want to make a donation of your time? Volunteer with us as we dig in with the Urban Tree Connection today from 12 to 2 p.m. The bus leaves at 11:30 a.m.

Wednesday, Sept. 16

See what boredom looks like in this 3-D brain scan of artist Gustav Metzger thinking about nothing, on view through October.

Thursday, Sept. 17

Indie everything and Le Tigre co-founder Johanna Fateman shows us the zines she’s picked out to coincide with Philalalia, at 6 p.m.

Friday, Sept. 18

Philalalia is Philly’s own small-press book and art fair. It started yesterday and is here through Saturday.

Saturday, Sept. 19

Can’t find a book you like at Philalalia? Then make your own (for free!) at our Publication Studio.

Monday, Sept. 21

Enjoy a free cup of Elixir coffee with us from 7:45 to 9:45 a.m., and find out what’s coming up next.

Tuesday, Sept. 22

Spend a day “in the clouds” with Jacob Hashimoto and his new Temple Contemporary commission at 3 p.m.

Wednesday, Sept. 23

Every Wednesday night we’re reimagining public education. Betsey Useem starts off this class at 6:30 p.m. by sharing her extensive knowledge of Philadelphia’s public school lineage with a historic overview.

Thursday, Sept. 24

With the pope coming to Philly this weekend, get ready to welcome the estimated 1.5 million visitors with this demo of how to make your own hand sanitizer, led by artist Zoë Sheehan Saldaña at 6 p.m.

Wednesday, Sept. 30

Our public-education conversation continues, as we look at the new creative public-school models cropping up across Philadelphia. Join us as we speak with Grace Cannon, executive director of the Office of New School Models, at 6:30 p.m.
