5 strategies for finding a seat in the TECH during finals week

End-of-the-semester sessions at Club TECH typically involve group projects, last-minute papers and presentations on that book you never bought. The struggle is real, and empty seats at the TECH Center are few. The good news is, the Starbucks in the lobby is open 24/7 to caffeinate you during these trying times. The better news? We have five strategies to help you snag a spot to work.

1. Wander around: Start by checking the screen in the main lobby that shows available and occupied seats, and start your rounds at the section with the most green seats. Remember that green doesn’t actually mean the computer will be functioning or that someone won’t be sitting there eating Jimmy John’s like the workstation is his own personal picnic spot. The more you walk, the more likely you are to land a seat. Pro tip: Wear comfy shoes.

2. BYOC: As in, bring your own computer. Finding an armchair, the side of a desk, an extra table or even a cozy spot on the floor can at times be easier than finding an open computer. Having your laptop handy dramatically ups your chances of finding a place to huddle your caffeine-powered body for the next few hours while you work. And work. And work.

3. Do the stare down: Everyone occupying the TECH this time of year is already 99.9 percent near the breaking point. If you want someone’s seat, then do whatever it takes to get that person to 100 percent. Lock eyes, don’t blink, focus. But don’t get too weird; it’s just a seat, Owls...

4. Bring the squad: You know the breakout rooms where those painful why-do-they-make-us-do-this group project “meetings” take place? Well, they can actually be helpful during times like these. Book a room online, grab three or four friends, bring your laptops and your wills to survive, and #getthingsdone together.

5. Never leave: Seriously, you’re never going to finish all that work anyway. The best way to ensure yourself the most uncomfortable seat in the house is to plant yourself there and stay dedicated to the cause.

No matter where you end up snagging a spot, remember to be nice to the people around you. Everyone is sleep deprived and feeling the pressure, and a little kindness goes a long way. Happy TECHing!
