Several members of the Center for Substance Abuse Research at the School of Medicine participated in an international conference on “Therapeutic Potential of the Cannabinoids: Present and Future,” held in Limassol, Cyprus, on May 1–4. Martin Adler, director of CSAR, was a member of the organizing committee and led a discussion on “Addiction and Cannabinoids.” Ronald Tuma, senior associate dean of education, G. H. Stewart professor of physiology and associate professor of neurosurgery at the School of Medicine, presented his work on “Modulation of the Endocannabinoid System as a Strategy to Modulate Ischemia/Reperfusion Injury.” Mary Abood, associate professor of anatomy and cell biology and associate professor at CSAR, presented a paper on “Therapeutic Potential of Cannabinoids in Amyelotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS).” Toby Eisenstein, co-director of CSAR, presented a talk on “Beneficial and Detrimental Implications of Cannabinoid/Opioid Interactions on Immune Responses.” The conference explored the translational utility of cannabinoids, both natural products and newly synthesized compounds, in a variety of clinical conditions.
