Vice President for Student Affairs Theresa A. Powell passed away Monday

To the Temple community,

It is with profound sadness that we inform you that Dr. Theresa Powell, vice president for student affairs, died suddenly Monday night while surrounded by family in her native state of Texas. For more than 20 years, she has served as a mentor, friend and advisor to so many students, faculty and staff members within the Temple University community.

Theresa came to Temple in 2002, and it was under her leadership that the Division of Student Affairs further developed its identity. Theresa helped establish the Division’s mission, vision and values, and she worked tirelessly to help Temple students become their best selves. Countless students have benefited from her guidance, and an equal number of staff members have reaped the benefits of her coaching.

Theresa’s impact in the world of student affairs was recognized by the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA), which elected her as president. In 2003, the association named her a Pillar of the Profession, and she earned the John L. Blackburn Distinguished Pillar Award. It is the highest honor that NASPA bestows upon members of the student affairs profession.

We encourage you to learn more about Theresa in this Temple Now story

A devastating loss like this is an unfortunate reminder of how fragile life can be. It will no doubt affect many of us and in many different ways. It is our hope that we can find solace in our fond memories of Theresa and the tremendous impact that she has made on our community. A commemoration to be held at a future date is being planned, and more information will be forthcoming.

Our deepest condolences go out to all of Theresa’s family, friends and the entire Temple University community. She will be deeply missed.

Sincerely,

Dr. Jason Wingard
