The June issue of Spirit, Southwest's monthly magazine, featured a travel story on Philadelphia. Readers were encouraged to visit North Philadelphia and the Legendary Blue Horizon on North Broad Street, an iconic 19th-century arena that was described by Sports Illustrated as "the last true boxing venue." The best place to stay for boxing pilgrims, according to Spirit, is Temple's own Conwell Inn, less than a mile from the Blue Horizon.

A new study suggests that getting kids computers and internet access at home can hurt school performance. Advocates for media literacy education say computers are a powerful tool, but have to be accompanied by instructions on how to use them for learning. David Cooper Moore of the Media Education Lab's Powerful Voices for Kids program advises parents to take an interest in what kids are watching and reading. He says students should learn media literacy skills starting at the age of five.

Using high-speed video, a Temple researcher has revealed the biomechanical tweaks that allow a little-known fish called the leaping blenny to thrive on land. Propelled by a twisting motion that turns their tails into springboards, leaping blennies have colonized rocky intertidal areas across the South Pacific. Biologist S. Tonia Hsieh is one of a handful of researchers to study leaping blennies, formally known as Alticus arnoldorum. "People say that a fish out of water is a dead fish, and that's not necessarily true."

As a high school student, Max Einhorn wrote film reviews for the Press and Journal. Today the Temple undergraduate is the producer of "The Two-Roomer," an independent feature film. "I have a clichéd history as a filmmaker," he said. "I was just one of those kids that found their parents’ video camera." While enrolled at Temple, Einhorn found time between exams to help raise funds, organize the premiere of his film and ensure a packed house. The premiere was held in Harrisburg, a short walk from nearly every one of the film’s set locations.
