Business contract with Police Department for security

Media Outlet:

Philadelphia Daily News

Businesses that want individual service from the Police Department contract with the city. The gigs always count as overtime, so they don't take away from the department's time or budget, and the businesses are likely paying top dollar for the police security. Jennifer Wood, a criminal justice professor at Temple, said that police-for-hire is just a fact of life. "The Police Department does their very best to provide equal protection to all," Wood said. But the truth is that certain groups can afford to get a better chunk of that protection. "It's simply a reality."

National Public Radio

Philadelphia's district attorney announced this morning that he will not continue to seek the death penalty for Mumia Abu-Jamal. NPR's news blog "The Two-Way" referred readers to an earlier comment by Craig Green of Temple's Beasley School of Law who says it's a story of two trials: "One is about a very gruesome death and murder of a police officer in the line of duty, Daniel Faulkner, with very compelling and marshaled evidence against Mumia Abu-Jamal. And on the other hand, it's a trial of the system.

Temple's Alpert describes difficulty in translating Leviticus from Hebrew

Media Outlet:

BBC World Service

There's one text that acts as a keystone for conservative faiths against homosexuality. It's the law book of Leviticus: "Thou shall not lie with mankind as with womankind; it is an abomination." Temple religion professor Rebecca Alpert is uneasy about accepting Leviticus's apparent simplicity uncritically: "Nobody knows what the word 'abomination' means in that Levitical passage. It's a Hebrew word we can't translate."
