Temple men dominate St. Joseph's

Media Outlet:

Philadelphia Inquirer

"There are times when watching a team exit the floor after playing Temple is like watching a person that had just been disgraced," wrote the Inquirer's Keith Pompey. "The pain is palpable." Temple's latest display of domination came Saturday against archrival St. Joseph's, a 78-60 victory before a crowd of 10,302 at the Liacouras Center (the venue's second-largest ever). "I think we can still get better," said Juan Fernandez. "But our defense is a good as it has been in a while."

Media Outlet:

Philadelphia Inquirer

Wildwood's status as one of a handful of Jersey Shore destinations that don't require beach tags is in danger, but imposing a new user fee could be tricky. "Adding the cost of a seasonal tag may not have that big of an impact on most people's budgets," said Wesley Roehl of Temple's School of Tourism and Hospitality Management. "But there could be a psychological impact overall, because you have something that goes from being entirely free to something that has a cost associated with it."

Research offers clues to how the adolescent brain works

Media Outlet:

Wall Street Journal

The reward centers of the adolescent brain are much more active than those of either children or adults. What teenagers want most of all are social rewards, especially the respect of their peers. In a recent study by Temple psychologist Laurence Steinberg, teenagers did a simulated high-risk driving task while being monitored by an fMRI. Their brains' reward systems were stimulated much more when they thought another teen was watching — and they took more risks.

Researchers at Temple have developed a virtual touch sensor that can touch a lump in the body and know almost immediately if it's likely to be cancerous or not. "Malignant tumors are stiffer, bigger and immobile, so if you can detect those characteristics, then you can identify and classify a tumor early," said electrical engineer Chang-Hee Won, who led the sensor's development.

Faced with the grim reality Philadelphia is now averaging about one to two murders per day, Mayor Nutter has announced a number of crime-fighting initiatives, including cash — $20,000 for tips that lead to the arrest and conviction of a murder suspect, and $500 for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of thugs who carry or sell illegal guns.
