Many college students say there is a lack of enthusiasm for this presidential election because the candidates are not addressing issues that are important to them, like college affordability, grants and loans. Asha Davis, a senior at Temple, was trying to energize younger citizens on the importance of voting. "I have heard a lot of people say well they don’t care about us any way,” Davis says, “and I’m like well, the healthcare bill, and any job policies that come out, the economy changes, all of those things do affect you."

America saw a campaign unlike any in history on Tuesday. This was the day social media made politics a communal experience. David Schuff, associate professor of management information systems at Temple's Fox School of Business, said that "one thing I am seeing on Twitter and Facebook is that people are making voting a viral, communal experience." On Facebook and Twitter, many shared pictures of "I Voted" badges and stickers. Schuff saw people "interacting on social media while waiting in line to vote — I've seen some ask for last-minute advice on local candidates."

The Temple Owls have their leader back. That was obvious during the Owls' media day, when members of the team were asked about Scootie Randall's return after redshirting last season. “We need Scootie. We need his voice. We need his toughness. We need his shooting ability. We need his experience. So, anytime you can get that much of an opportunity to play somebody like that, it's helping your team,” said Owls coach Fran Dunphy.

Gamifying the classroom

A model of classroom gamification is Steven L. Johnson, an assistant professor of management information systems at Temple's Fox School of Business. He created a Social Media Innovation Quest where students earn points and receive badges. "You will always have your top performers, and you'll always have students who struggle, no matter how many incentives you throw at them," he said. "A well-designed gamification system has the most impact on the middle 40 to 60 percent of students. It motivates these students to do more."
