For the last 50 years, Dominic Galante has worked in the registrar's office at La Salle. He started as an administrative assistant on Nov. 5, 1962. Now he is the registrar. He supervises a department of nine and is responsible for rostering classes and maintaining records for 6,600 students, plus alumni. In this time of layoffs, it can be a challenge for someone to keep a job for 50 weeks, let alone 50 years. "It is unusual," said Kate Nelson, a human resources instructor at Temple's Fox School of Business. "I think it is generational."

Professor David Schuff and his colleagues at Temple's Fox School of Business watched the growing role of social media in the 2008 presidential election and set out to answer this question: "How much is your next Twitter follower worth to a campaign?" Thus was born Translating the Effectiveness of Media into Performance, or TEMPO, a media index that searches for campaign references in Twitter feeds, Facebook pages, YouTube hits and blog posts. They collaborated with LexisNexis to add print and broadcast mentions of campaigns under study.

"Atlantic City was Disneyland before there even was a Disneyland," wrote Temple historian Bryant Simon, author of Boardwalk of Dreams: Atlantic City and the Fate of Urban America, in a New Republic op-ed. Yet behind the fantasy, he argued, "there was always the reality of a city, a place of department stores and pawn shops, the well-heeled and the down and out, tourists and locals, black and white." Hurricane Sandy, wrote Simon, "brought the tensions between the two Atlantic Citys to the forefront, again."

When you Skype, it sometimes feels like you are actually sitting across the table from someone rather than being miles away. It’s called telepresence and it was the focus of a conference at Temple University. “Presence happens when people use technology and overlook at least part of its role in the experience, as when … an online virtual world seems real,” said Temple professor Matthew Lombard.

Jordan teeters on edge of political instability

A model of security in a very unstable Middle East, Jordan could now be teetering on the cusp of political conflict and instability. The elections are going to be the dividing line," says Sean Yom, a Jordan expert at Temple. "They're supposed to be the inaugural elections of the new electoral law, a whole new system of democratic governance. If various opposition forces do not see the elections as credible, you will see real signs of instability," he said.

The hunt is on to establish a Dow Jones for social media, and the competition is fierce for a compact way to interpret it all. Temple University’s TEMPO effort is among the most wide-ranging and promising. Through an alliance with LexisNexis, Fox School of Business researchers are collecting data for social and traditional media for about 900 candidates. “The whole purpose of this is to see how exposure relates to the polls,” said David Schuff, Fox's director of Innovation in Learning Technologies.
