Penn State trustees' campaign heats up

Voting for new trustees at Penn State is set to begin and a campaign is underway to persuade more alumni to vote. None of this campaigning surprises Jason Del Gandio, a Temple assistant professor of rhetoric and public policy. He said college campuses have a long history of activism and protests. He said campuses contain a key ingredient for activism: community investment. "Penn State has a long and glorious history," he said. "The Jerry Sandusky scandal is motivating people to recoup the campus ethos."

Temple Health System establishes population health center

Temple University Health System has established an Institute for Population Health. “The Institute is an important component of Temple’s ongoing focus on improving the health of urban populations in North Philadelphia and across the city,” said Paula Stillman, vice president of health-care services. “Temple has already undertaken several initiatives and pilot projects with this in mind, and the Institute will be crucial in helping us accomplish our goal of engaging patients and their physicians in programs that will improve health outcomes at a lower cost.”

Smaller dishes, portions may help kids stay at a healthy weight

Shrinking the size of kids' plates and bowls might help them eat less and keep off extra weight, new research suggests. Jennifer Fisher, a researcher at Temple’s Center for Obesity Research and one of the study authors, said it was preliminary but could still inform parent choices. "For now, certainly it seems like something parents can easily incorporate into their daily lives without a lot of work and effort," she said.

Joseph P. Lucia appointed dean of Temple University Libraries

President Theobald has announced the appointment of Joseph P. Lucia to lead Temple's library system as the university's dean of university libraries. Lucia has served as university librarian and director of Falvey Memorial Library at Villanova University since 2002. He will assume his position at Temple on July 1.

New living community will foster entrepreneurial culture

A new Innovate and Create Living Learning Community at White Hall will open next fall to incoming freshmen. Participating students will take a freshman seminar offering a roadmap for entrepreneurship, participate in Temple’s Entrepreneurial Student Association and attend at least five Innovation and Entrepreneurship Institute events, such as fireside chats and business plan workshops.

Provost Hai-Lung Dai lays out priorities for Temple academics

Theater professor develops unique dialect for Center City stage production

Temple Theater Professor Lynne Innerst recently collaborated with directors and cast members to craft a new dialect for the play "Under the Whaleback," staged through early April at the Wilma Theater in Center City Philadelphia. Written by British playwright Richard Bean, the play portrays English merchant fisherman, whose lives of isolation created a unique challenge for the dialect coach. "They see the North Sea, the Arctic, more than they see England or their families," said Innerst.

Temple Ambler develops aquaponic vegetable garden

Big things are growing in the basement of West Hall at Temple Ambler. Students and faculty have constructed the school’s first aquaponic vegetable garden and are currently growing crops to be sold at local farmers markets and community cupboards. “The long-term goal is to make the garden completely self-sustaining and energy-efficient,” said Phil Ross, junior horticulture major.
