Diverse: Issues in Higher Education
Based in the Center for Bioethics, Urban Health and Policy at Temple's School of Medicine, Temple's Philadelphia CeaseFire program sends outreach workers into neighborhoods to fight gun violence. It's unique because it is based medical school and supervised by academics and scholars. Director Marla Davis-Bellamy says outreach workers "identify potential clients engaged in high-risk activity or who have some prior history of offending and intervene in their lives to offer them alternatives." "We believe Temple has the experience and opportunity to be recognized nationally as an expert in urban health, and we wanted to approach it in a collaborative way," said Kathleen Reeves, founder of the center.
