The over-use of antibiotics has created infections that are antibiotic resistant, and some doctors are now relying on heavy metals to help treat chronic wounds and infections. James McGuire, director of the Center for Advanced Wound Healing at Temple, recommends dressings infused with tiny silver particles to his patients, because he says silver has antimicrobial powers. "The bacteria don’t grow, and the wound does not get infected. You don't get any sepsis and you heal faster," said McGuire. He adds that copper also has healing powers: "That actually kills the bacteria and fungus in the sock," he said.
