Valley Green Bank in northwest Philadelphia has just two locations and saw its portfolio grow 30 percent last year. Recently, eight bank executives from the much larger Penn National Bank announced they were defecting to Valley Green. Kenneth Kopecky, chair of the finance department in Temple’s Fox School of Business, says the move is unusual. “Clearly there are some competitive advantages in some of the smaller banks, especially the newer banks whose portfolios aren't filled with a lot of poorly performing loans and other types of instruments. But the large banks and the medium-sized banks are going to recover,” he said.
