After 42 years of enduring the best shots that age, urban decay and commercial evolution could deliver, Joe Frazier’s Gym earned a spot on the National Register of Historic Places this week. Starting in 2011, Temple’s Dennis Playdon enlisted students in his “Introduction to Architectural Preservation” class to work on saving the gym. During the process, the Temple team developed newfound respect for the iconic Philadelphia boxer. “In talking to people, I really got the sense that Frazier was a neighborhood guy who touched everyone around there,” said Playdon. “Everyone seems to have a story about him.”
