In an opinion piece, John Goldkamp, professor of criminal justice at Temple, took issue with those who have suggested that the city might have to return to the days of bailbondsmen. "Philadelphia has to get more of its criminal defendants to show up in court, and it must manage them safely while they await trial. But bringing private bail bondsmen back to the city would ignore the lessons of research and history," wrote Goldkamp. "In these admittedly challenging circumstances, Philadelphia has an opportunity to demonstrate the value of a rational, comprehensive, evidence-based system for making pretrial release and detention decisions."
